VK5 Conservation/National Parks Award 1 year Anniversary

The weekend of the 5th and 6th of April was the one year anniversary of the VK5 Parks award, which encourages portable operation from South Australia’s National & Conservation parks. ‘Activators’ operate portable from within parks, while ‘Hunters’ make contacts with activators. Awards are available for both activators and hunters, and also for making park-to-park contacts.

Andy VK5AKH and Mark VK5QI decided to give the AREG club callsign (VK5ARG) a workout by activating as many parks as possible in a single day. They set off Sunday morning at 7:30AM, and by 8PM had activated 20 parks. Emphasis was placed on fast activations, with about 5 contacts made per park.

The parks activated were:

  1. Morialta Conservation Park
  2. Black Hill Conservation Park
  3. Montacute Conservation Park
  4. Giles Conservation Park
  5. Horsnell Gully Conservation Park
  6. Ferguson Conservation Park
  7. Clealand Conservation Park
  8. Mount George Conservation Park
  9. Kenneth Stirling Conservation Park
  10. Mylor Conservation Park
  11. Mark Oliphant Conservation Park
  12. “The Knoll” Conservation Park
  13. Belair National Park
  14. Marino Conservation Park
  15. Hallett Cove Conservation Park
  16. Onkaparinga River Conservation Park
  17. Moana Sands Conservation Park
  18. Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park
  19. Kyeema Conservation Park
  20. Mount Magnificent Conservation Park

John Moyle Memorial Field Day 2014 – VK5ARG

This year for the John Moyle Memorial field day 10 members from the Amateur Radio Experimenters Group (AREG) and 3 Members from the Elizabeth Amateur Radio Club (EARC) decided to combine efforts under the AREG club call-sign VK5ARG.
The Para-Wirra recreation pack, 30km north-east of Adelaide, was chosen for its low noise floor and relatively close location to the city. Theo, VK5MTM has produced a video showing the events of the weekend:

A great weekend was had by all, and we totalled 927 contacts across the HF bands.Thank you to those who attended, lent us gear and to all those stations we worked. Please submit your log and we hope to see you next year.

The Amateur Radio Experimenters Group next general meeting is scheduled for the 21st of Feb 2014.

This month the AREG is off on a guided tour of the Mt Lofty TV towers.   This means that  the club rooms will not be opened this month since we’re all up on the other side of Adelaide until quite late.

For those interested in catching up with the regulars, we are planning Dinner at a local pub after the tour, most likely somewhere in Aldgate.  Details to follow shortly.

Happy New Year !

The Amateur Radio Experimenters Group next general meeting is Friday the 17th of January 2014.

This month will be a very rare event with two meetings needing to be held on the same night.   There will be a 20-25 minute “close door” meeting for members starting at 8pm sharp in the computer room.  All members that are attending are asked to make an effort to be down to the club rooms at 7:45pm.  Visitors are welcome to arrive at the usual start time, tea coffee and biscuits will be available for a gold coin donation out in the kitchen while the first meeting is in progress.

At 8:30pm the usual monthly meeting will be held in the main hall for all attending, after which we’ll adjourn for coffee, tea and the remaining biscuits that our guest have left for us (*grin*).

There are opportunities for Dinner at the Lockley’s beforehand, please let me know if you are going to attend by 12pm Friday, table bookings are essential.

AREG Christmas BBQ 22nd December 2013

To mark the end of another year the AREG will be having a BYO Christmas BBQ for members, friends and family in Bonython park on the 22nd of December 2013.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

The BBQ will be held by the banks of the River Torrens close to the Kiosk, starting at 11am.  A marquee and table will be available to hold food/plates etc.   The day will be BYO everything ie meat, drinks, chairs and salads.  I was going to suggest that salads could be placed on a table to share.

There are electric BBQ’s in this area that can be used to cook food, and a playground for the kids.   There are also shady trees that I’m sure a HF longwire (or two) will be slung into.

The following map will get you into the right location (CLICK).  Liasion will be via VK5RSA 438.025MHz.

We hope to see you there.
