AREG July Meeting – Lightning Talks: AREG members in the VHF/UHF Field Day

Hopefully you have noticed by now that AREG is currently heavily promoting VHF and UHF activity within the Amateur Service. Many of our members took the hint and got up on the air for the WIA’s Winter VHF/UHF field day this year!

Now that the event is over, we thought it would be great to review the events of the day and have each of those who participated give a short 5 minute summary of their experiences on VHF/UHF in the contest this year. So the next meeting will be a series of member “Lightning Talks” – 5 minutes each on how you went, what you did, what worked and what didn’t – so that we can share the experiences and learning ready for the next event in Spring.

To hear how everyone went, come along to the AREG meeting this Friday night, starting at 7.30pm. AREG meets at the Fulham Community Centre, off Phelps Court, Fulham. Visitors are most welcome.

For those members interstate or locally who cant attend in person, the meeting will as usual also be conducted in parallel online via Zoom. Visitors who would like to attend our meeting via Zoom can email our secretary – Mark via secretary@areg.org.au to request guest access to the Zoom conference for the night.

After the presentations, there will be a short business meeting. This is our last business meeting for 2021/22 as the AREG Annual General Meeting will take place next month, on the 19th of August.

We also hope to have a special guest speaker at the AGM – stay tuned for more details!

AREG June Meeting: Build your own Commodore C64 Computer!

The next meeting of the Amateur Radio Experimenter’s Group will be held on Friday June 17th starting at 7.45pm. It will be held in person at the Fulham Community Centre, Phelps Court, Fulham.

Our guest speaker will be Michael VK5LN who will talk about his experiences bringing back to life one of the iconic  home computers of the 1980s,the Commodore C64! Whats more, he will show us how he has built a new C64 from scratch using the resources of the modern day retro-computing movement, which is very much alive in 2022!

The record breaking Commodore 64 computer that dominated the home computer market in the early 1980s is still going strong 40 years later! There is an endless stream of new software and hardware being developed. During its production life there were a number of different PCB revisions and each has been reverse engineered and gerber files produced so you can build your own Commodore 64 with new components. While you still need some original semiconductors in order to home brew a Commodore 64, there are modern replacements to help out.

My original 1983 Commodore 64 is still working (after needing a few repairs after being in storage for 30 years) but there is something magical about building your own retro computer.

The meeting will be held in a hybrid in-person/online format with Michael attending by remote from Port Lincoln while the live audience will be both in the hall as well as online via Zoom for members. (non members please stay tuned as we sort out if we can Youtube Stream the meeting as well).

Following the presentation there will be the usual business meeting and opportunity to catch up with AREG members in person and online. We look forward to seeing you all come along!

3D Printing Introduction – Youtube LiveStream Friday 17th 7.45pm ACST

AREG is pleased to confirm that our next meeting will be streamed live on Youtube via the HamRadioDX Channel!

The broadcast will start on Friday 17th September:

  • 7.45pm ACST
  • 8:15pm AEST
  • 1015 UTC

The presentation by Scott VK5TST will provide an introduction to filament based 3D printing. While the technology is large, and there are many ways to use and enjoy it, this is based on one person’s experiences. I approached 3D printing as getting a new tool to help with other hobbies, rather than my hobby being build and development of the printer.

The presentation will discuss the technology, the process, equipment (software, printer and consumables) with some tips on how to get started. Not to mention a few lessons over a year or so of playing with the hobby.

The Amateur Radio Experimenters Group will be hosting the presentation live at our clubrooms at the same time, Phelps Court, Fulham. Doors will be open from 7.15pm. COVID Safe protocols will need to be observed – face masks will need to be worn and COVID Check in will be mandatorty.

Remote AREG members will be able to interact with the meeting via our Zoom link.
