Lake Breeze Wines – AREG Sponsor

Here at the Amateur Radio Experimenters Group we value the efforts put in by our various meeting presenters to bring to life their interests for the wider amateur community. As a way of saying thank you, we gift each of those presenters a premium bottle of wine. To that end, we are very pleased to have been sponsored by Lake Breeze Winery, based in Langhorne Creek here in South Australia who have provided us a wine of outstanding quality to say thank you to our presenters with.

The Lake Breeze Story

The first three vintages of Bernoota were quite different blends. It wasn’t until 1995 that the blend settled in as 60% shiraz and 40% cabernet.

Our Bernoota has won some outstanding awards at national wine shows,

  • 13 trophies
  • 54 gold medals
  • 80 silver medals
  • 107 bronze medals

The wine is fermented on skins in open static fermenters for 7-10 days, followed by maturation for 20 months in American and French oak barriques.

The wine shows dark fruit characters of blackberry and plums, with a hint of choc mint and smoky oak aromas. The palate has all of the trademark Langhorne Creek fruit sweetness and soft tannins.

As you’ve no doubt read on the back label, ‘Bernoota’ is the name of the homestead here at Lake Breeze. The homestead and our cellar door building were built back in 1928 by Harry Follett, when he took up the Southern-most portion of the Follett property.

‘Bernoota’ is a indigenous Ngarrindjeri term, meaning ‘home amongst the gum trees’. If you’ve visited cellar door and have seen the magnificent river red gums lining the river and scattered amongst the vineyards, you’d agree it is a very appropriate name.

Ken and Marlene have lived here since the mid 1960’s when they were married, and it is still very much the hub of all Follett family and Lake Breeze gatherings, with all the big decisions being made around the kitchen table!

Our Bernoota has attracted some high praise from wine writers e.g. “The ‘Bernoota’ Shiraz Cabernet is the best value red in the country since my twenties,” says Nick Ryan in The Weekend Australian.
