Foxhunting (Radio Direction Finding)

A very popular activity within the AREG is radio direction finding. This has taken many forms throughout the years, but the primary mode has been though participating in the Australian/American version which is vehicle based (as opposed to the IARU ARDF championships which are all conducted on foot).

Club members have regularly participated in the National Foxhunting Championships held in and around Mt Gambier in South Australia every year, hosted by the South East Radio Group (SERG)

For a bit more of an idea of the fun had at this event, take a look at this short film shot at the National Championships in Mt Gambier by club member Grant VK5GR

In 2013 AREG club members collaborated with the South East Radio Group to combine high altitude balloons with this event. The following Google map timelapse will give you an idea of the shenanigans that went on when the hounds didnt know what they were up against!

If you would like to know more, why not come down to a club meeting? There is almost always at least one member present who actively participates in this aspect of the hobby!
