The Club

The Amateur Radio Experimenters Group was formed in July 1998. The members of the Club come from all walks of life and even includes some people who don’t work in the electronics industry.

AREG is has a ‘practical’ focus. We have built and maintain two of Adelaide’s premiere repeaters VK5RSA (438.025) and VK5RSB (439.900) VK5RSB, the last being connected to the internet via IRLP and occasionally Echolink to provide a worldwide FM quality service. We also use the IRLP link to provide Audio Broadcasts of the NASA Space Shuttle when available.

AREG members are all licensed amateur radio operators with an interest in the practical side of the hobby. If you are interested in obtaining your license AREG runs one day Foundation License Courses on a quarterly basis. If you have done your own study and just want to sit for an exam, we have two WIA Certified Examiners who can administer your exam and give you your results on the spot.

When we are not playing with the repeater we have varying interests. Some of us like to play with older radio's from the 1960’s to the 1980's. We have member's which are involved in two competing teams at the National Fox hunting championships. The Yaesu FT102 is a set which is popular amongst members at present. Others work DX on the HF bands, some stay on the FM repeaters and others design and build the complex interfaces that keep our repeaters running.

We have a formal meeting on a quarterly basis and a practical meeting a regular intervals throughout the year. At the practical meetings we build antenna’s, help other club members put antennas on their tower, modify old commercial radios for ham use or just move a few electrons along a wire.

If you are interested in becoming a member of an active practical club send us an email and we will invite you to the next meeting, there is always lots to do and learn at AREG!
